Hell's Revenge

Rating 4: This trail is full of steep slick rock climbs and some ledges. If you take the bypasses it isn't too difficult, but there are a few obstacles that if you chose to do them it will increase the rating to 6-8.

Location: Just East of Moab, UT.

Trailhead: The trailhead is 2.2 miles east of Moab on the Sand Flats road (measured from 4th street). The road is immediatly after the fee station and is on the left. It is well marked. GPS coordinates are 38°34'31.8"N 109°31'21.3"W (38.575488, -109.522593)

This trail is what jeeping in Moab is all about. If you have no experience doing steep slickrock climbs, it may be intimidating. If you follow the route, you will be fine and your vehicle can do the climbs without difficulty. We did the trail with a stock CJ-7 in our group and they were amazed at how well their Jeep did that day.

This is one of my favorite roads in Moab, UT. It is similar to Fins and Things, but the slick rock climbs are steeper. Many people give it a higher rating (the Red Rock 4-Wheeler site rates it a 6), but if you take the bypasses a stock wrangler can do this trail without significant difficulty. In fact, I remember reading that the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Edition was tested on Hell's Revenge and did quite well.

There is also an overlook of the Colorado River which gives a great view of the red rock cliffs and the river. This can make a great place for lunch, but be ready to share the site with other people because it is a popular stopping place on the trail.

There are some difficult obstacles on this route that can drastically increase the rating. One obstacle that is part of the official trail is called Tip-Over Challenge. Many vehicles often get a tire in the air when you are going up this, and it requires you turning on a steep hill that gives the obstacle it's name. This obstacle requires at least one locking differential, preferably two. If you do this obstacle it will increase the rating to 6.

There are two other optional obstacles that increase the rating to an 8. These are called Hell's Gate (which is near the observation point) and The Escalator (which is near Tip-Over Challenge).

Here are the GPX and KML files.

This is Tip-Over Challenge. If you notice there is a crack running across the center of it which often makes you get a tire in the air. Also, you have to turn at the top which makes it tippy. There is an easy bypass around it.
